With technological evolution, one can observe that all the industries have been disrupted in this age of Information Technology. We can say this in the case of automation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) mainly and hospitals institutes, care providers, doctors, insurance companies, and industries directly related to healthcare have all been impacted – in numerous occasions more positively in substantial ways than other sectors.
As per a recent report, it is being said that almost approximately 86 percent of healthcare providing organizations, life science firms, and technology vendors to healthcare providers are utilizing artificial intelligence technology. By 2020, these organizations will be spending an average of $54 Mn on artificial intelligence projects.
On a serious note, maternal health remains a constant reason to worry in the United States due in part to undetected hemorrhaging. To curb the issue, a new technology called Triton has been introduced by Gauss Surgical, which can detect blood loss in real time using artificial intelligence. The revolutionary technology can change the entire course of medicine for the expecting mothers and care providers at the same time.
A Central Florida hospital called Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies has become the pioneer in adopting the technology and started training nurses to use this particular AI technology in the labor and delivery section. According to experts, this is the first product that has been geared towards assisting mothers to have a better outcome. The mechanism works like a camera on an iPad, carefully studying the surgical sponges using facial recognition technology to determine grams of hemoglobin. The swift nurses can identify blood loss over other fluids, the better the result for patients.
According to the creators before this technology, it was manual process hence the nurses had to give their full concentration towards measuring things, weighing them and subtract things out and it was time-consuming. They had to leave what they were doing and concentrate on the current situation. Alongside until now the decision to order blood transfusions had been subjective based on visual estimations. According to doctors they are finding that people bleed less than what they had initially thought, so before this people were having estimated blood losses over 500, and with this product, the doctors have seen it be less than 100.
As per records from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the last decade and half the number of maternal deaths has been on the rise significantly in the U.S. due to undetected hemorrhaging. Now with the introduction of this new Triton technology which will be introduced in every maternity and delivery unit and operating room at Winnie Palmer Hospital, the other care providers will be able to understand the benefits consecutively.
With AI getting increasingly sophisticated at doing what humans do, but in an enhanced and efficient way at a lower cost, the technology is sure to revolutionize various industries. The potential for both AI and robotics in healthcare is immense and waiting to be explored.
