MITRE added two more members – Daniela Rus and Nadia Schadlow, to its Senior Visiting Fellows Program. MITRE’s Senior Visiting Fellows programs were shaped in the year 2018 with a primary focus on engaging the leading experts on topics of critical national importance, such as national defense, cybersecurity, latest technologies, and health.
Daniela Rus is the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and the director of the Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT. She also serves as the deputy dean of research for the Schwarzman College of Computing. Robotics technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are her research interests.
She is a Class of 2002 MacArthur Fellow and a notable member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and National Academy of Engineering. She received the world’s most respected Engelberger Robotics Award for Education.
Nadia Schadlow is another MITRE senior visiting fellow who is a popular strategist and practitioner of national security. She has successfully served the leadership positions in both the government as well as the private sector, such as the Department of Defense and the National Security Council. To note, Schadlow also served as a deputy national security advisor for strategy and assistant to the president of the U.S.
Since the end of the Cold War, Schadlow’s strategy paper was the first to determine the reappearance of inordinate power rivalries as a dominant feature of over-all geopolitics. This paper also included the idea of a National Security Innovation Base and evaluated the potential influence of disruptive technologies on the security interests of the United States. While at MITRE, she will continue to work on the same issues.
Regarding these senior visiting fellows, Jason Providakes, president and CEO, says, “Daniela and Nadia bring deep practical experience and unique perspectives to our distinguished team of Visiting Fellows. Both Daniela and Nadia will help to advance MITRE’s efforts of addressing large, complex problems facing our society.”

- LTG Steven Boutelle, USA (Ret.), former CIO, U.S. Army.
- Tom Chi, founding team member of Google X.
- Rick Ledgett, former deputy director, NSA.
- Michael Chernew, director of Healthcare Markets & Regulation Laboratory, Harvard Medical School.
- Robert Work, former deputy secretary of defense.
- Mark McClellan, director of Duke Margolis Center for Health Policy.
- Ashton B. Carter, Ph.D., former U.S. secretary of defense.
- Robert Darnell, founder of New York Genome Center and professor of cancer biology, Rockefeller University.
All the senior visiting fellows are known to add to research and development programs. Some of them have been directing MITRE on the supply chain, medicinal services, and other pertaining issues in the light of COVID19.
